Royal Squared Color (stylized as Royal² COLOR) is a colored remake of the GameBoy Jam submission Royal Squared from 2016. It is based around the main protagonist of the V2A SP sub series, Kvarol (King Square). Kvarol is in charge of getting through three areas in SP (Endless Forest, Infinity Core Caves, Zelosian Plaj) to find his brother Soverdat (Supreme Square).

The game was developed for MEOS and development has started as early as May 2018. To repeat the pattern of the first Royal Squared, all of the work has been done by Octopus58, including writing the code in C#, remaking the existing tiles but in color with more detail, and re-remixing the soundtrack. This was the first platformer to start development on MEOS.

Unlike it's GameBoy predecessor, Royal Squared Color was made to fit a 16:9 resolution, allowing the player to see more of the screen. Due to the increase in resolution, scaling issues were fixed using a pixel perfect camera scheme. The color version has much more polish due to the fact that this game didn't have a due date on when it should be finished.

Gameplay

Royal Squared has only one playable character, Kvarol (King Square). You are able to charge, which is a very useful movement throughout the game. Charging allows you to keep moving as long as it is held, and can carry you large distances. You can also jump and walk like in a normal platformer. The obstacles in this game are simple; they consist of ceiling spikes (that fall when the player is near them), ground/wall spikes (that hurt the player when they touch them), and Rones that roll around the ground and hurt the player on collision. They can however, unlike spikes, be destroyed (with the exception of Giga Rone). When the player is hurt, he gets respawned in the beginning of the current level. The game originally ended when the player finds Soverdat (Supreme Square) at the end of Zelosian Plaj.

However, the color update to the game brought three new routes. King route, Supreme Route II, and Ultimate Route. Each route has its own set of levels which you can go through by completing the route prior. Additionally, this version of the game has unlockable skins/purchasable skins to play with.

Multiplayer is another highlight of the game, as you can see the people who are currently in your MultiME party, with their own skins.

Plot

There is not much plot to this game, besides it taking place around the same time as Guppy's Quest (since Rone's appear as enemies throughout the game). Kvarol has lost his brother, Soverdat, and was set out to find him.

Development

Royal Squared Color had a very experimental development cycle. As much as Octopus58 wanted to create a colored version of Royal Squared, he was unsure of whether to make the game stand alone or to put it on MEOS, as the idea of this OS with many games and programs was not final. The risk was taken however, and the color version got more detail and polish on art and music, along with mechanics.

After finishing the first route, he decided that he wanted to add more levels to the game, and therefore decided that the game was not finished yet.

Music

The music in the game is composed by Octopus58. All the songs are remixes of previously existing songs.
